During their careers, some investment professionals decide to pursue additional educational opportunities to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the financial industry. Following are explanations to help you understand some of the designations you may see for professionals within the financial community:
The CAIA Association ® Designation. Advisors with a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA) designation have completed the CAIA Program, which includes passing the Level II exam within three years of passing the program’s Level I exam, and accumulating more than one year of professional experience plus a US bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or four years of professional experience. The CAIA Association focuses its attention specifically on alternative investments such as hedge funds, venture capital and private equity, real estate, and managed futures.
The CFA ® Designation. Advisors with a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation have completed a three-year self-study graduate-level program for investment professionals. CFA certification requires a passing grade on three levels of exams, as well as meeting certain other professional and ethical requirements.
The CFP ® Designation. Advisors with a CFP designation have taken the additional step to earn their Certified Financial Planner™ certification. CFP certification requires post-college coursework at CFP-designated institutions, three years of relevant work experience, and a passing grade on the rigorous CFP exam.
The CPA Designation. Advisors with the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation have passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination and met additional state education and experience requirements.
The NBCOA ® Designation. Advisors with the NBCOA designation have earned the National Board of Certified Options Advisor designation. This effort demonstrates expertise in dealing with employee stock options and other forms of employee equity compensation.
